Easily Calculate the Number of Gabion Stones

Filling a gabion cage may seem simple. However, accurately calculating the amount of gabion stones needed helps avoid two costly mistakes: ordering too few stones and halting construction, or ordering too many stones that are difficult to store. The correct method starts with the gabion’s actual interior volume, then adjusts for the type of stone chosen, its particle size, and the shape of your project.

A low wall, a privacy fence, a column, or a raised flower bed aren't calculated quite the same way. Here's how to get a reliable estimate—including installation—without overcomplicating your project.

Calculate the number of stones needed for a gabion

The basic formula is straightforward:

Volume of the gabion in m³ = length × width × height

All measurements must be converted to meters. A gabion that is 200 cm long, 50 cm deep, and 100 cm high therefore measures 2 m × 0.5 m × 1 m. Its volume is 1 m³.

To convert from volume to fill weight, use the average density of the stones:

Weight of stones in metric tons = volume of the gabion × density of the stones

For most natural stones used to fill gabions, the density generally ranges from 1.5 to 1.8 metric tons per cubic meter. A practical reference value is 1 .6 metric tons per cubic meter. In our example of 1 cubic meter, you should therefore plan for approximately 1,600 kilograms of stones.

This estimate is intentionally realistic: the gaps between the stones are factored into the calculation. You should not multiply the volume by the weight of a compact rock block. Gabion stones are delivered in bulk, and the air between the pieces naturally reduces the total mass within a given cage.

Example of a garden wall

You are planning to build a low wall that is 3 m long, 0.4 m deep, and 0.8 m high. The calculation is as follows: 3 × 0.4 × 0.8 = 0.96 m³.

With a stone that has a density of 1.6 t/m³, you’ll need 0.96 × 1.6 = 1.54 metric tons, or approximately 1,540 kg. To ensure a smooth order, round up to 1.6 metric tons if the packaging allows it. It’s a good idea to allow for a slight margin, especially if you want to select the most attractive sides of the stones for the visible areas.

Example of a gabion column

A column measuring 30 × 30 cm and 180 cm high has a volume of 0.3 × 0.3 × 1.8 = 0.162 m³. At 1.6 t/m³, this amounts to approximately 260 kg of stone.

When working with a narrow, decorative element, the quantity is modest, but the choice of size becomes crucial. If the particle size range is too wide, it creates large gaps and makes it difficult to fill the space neatly. For a column, visual uniformity is just as important as the total volume.

The density varies depending on the stone chosen

The rule of 1.6 metric tons per cubic meter is a good basis for calculation, not a universal truth. Basalt, granite, limestone, quartz, and cobblestones do not have the same density, shape, or void ratio once placed in the gabion.

Heavy, compact stones can weigh close to 1.8 metric tons per cubic meter when loose. More porous or irregular stones may weigh around 1.4 to 1.5 metric tons per cubic meter. Always refer to the weight specified for the stone you have selected. It is this information that turns a correct volume calculation into an order that is truly tailored to your needs.

Shape also plays a role. Angular crushed stones interlock differently than rounded pebbles. They often provide good stability, while pebbles create a softer, more natural look. Both options are compatible with a gabion, provided you adhere to the mesh size and accept that the final weight may vary slightly.

Choose a particle size that matches the mesh size

Grain size refers to the range of stone dimensions, for example, 60 to 120 mm. It must be larger than the mesh opening. Otherwise, small stones may fall through the cage, particularly during filling or as a result of ground movement.

With a mesh size of 50 × 50 mm, a stone measuring 60 to 120 mm is a common choice. It is held securely in place while allowing for smooth filling. For larger mesh sizes, increase the aggregate size accordingly. In any case, don’t rely solely on an average size: the minimum aggregate size must remain compatible with the mesh size.

A larger size often reduces the mass required for the same volume, since it creates more voids. It can also be more difficult to place on visible surfaces. Conversely, a more uniform size results in a more consistent appearance, but can sometimes take longer to install. The right choice therefore depends on the gabion’s function: retaining structure, decorative screen, foundation, trough, or simple landscaping element.

Should we leave a margin of stones?

Yes, but don't order too much. A margin of 5 to 10% is useful for projects where the sides remain visible, for gabions with unusual shapes, and when you want to sort the stones by hand. This allows you to reserve the best-looking stones for the exterior sections and neatly fill in the less accessible areas.

For a closed, rectangular gabion mechanically filled with uniform stones, 5% is often sufficient. For a column, a curved structure, a stepped border, or a composition combining several types of stones, aim for closer to 10%. This margin also accounts for the normal variations associated with manual compaction.

Be careful, however: packing does not mean forcing. The stones should settle naturally around the spacers and against the panels. Filling the cage too tightly can deform it or push the mesh outward. Stability comes from the quality of the assembly, the mounting tie rods, and gradual filling—not from excessive pressure.

Measure the right amount for your project

For a long gabion fence, calculate each segment separately if the height or depth changes. Then add the volumes together. This method is more accurate than a general calculation, especially if your property is sloped or if posts, gates, and turns alter the fence line.

For a raised flower bed or a raised pond, do not calculate the total external volume. Only the gabion walls are filled with stone. You should therefore add up the volume of each wall or use the difference between the external volume and the internal volume. A structure measuring 2 m × 1 m can thus hold far less stone than its external dimensions would suggest.

When designing a seat or bench, also take into account the crossbeams, slabs, or other elements that occupy part of the quarry. A custom size requires precise measurements before placing an order. A few extra centimeters in depth over several meters in length can quickly add up to several hundred kilograms of stone.

The errors that most often skew the calculation

The first mistake is to use centimeters in the formula and then interpret the result as cubic meters. Always convert the units before multiplying. The second mistake is to forget the thickness of the walls of a container or pond: the volume to be filled is that of the gabions, not that of the planting area or the basin.

The third step is to determine the quantity before selecting the stone. Start by determining the type of stone, its weight per cubic meter, and its size, then confirm the total tonnage. Finally, don’t overlook access to the job site. A metric ton of stone must be able to be unloaded and moved under good conditions, with a clean storage area and a designated path around the gabion.

Fill it out neatly for a lasting result

Fill the gabion in layers, placing the spacers as you go according to the planned configuration. On the visible sides, place the stones one by one with their most attractive side facing outward. In the center, you can fill it more quickly, while avoiding very large gaps.

Don't close the lid until you've checked the level along the entire length. The stones sometimes settle into place after being moved around a few times, and the level may drop slightly. Keep a few stones nearby until you close the lid for good.
